This is NOT Real Soup!

sickI am a little late getting my blog out this week and it is because I have been a bit under the weather.  My go to when I don’t feel good is homemade chicken soup.  I talked in a previous blog about making broth from scratch to get the most nutrition possible.  So, in light of chicken soup being a healing food, I want to point out that not all soup is healing.  I did a talk a few days ago at a Farm to Fork Conference here in Michigan and the title of my talk was REAL FOOD 101:  Do You Know What You Are Eating?  I have to say, a lot of people don’t really know what they are eating.  They might read the label and see that it says Natural, Healthy Choice, Low-Fat, Low-Calorie, or even Organic and think that means its healthy.  Unfortunately, most things in boxes, bags, cans or packages are not very healthy.  Part of my talk was a game called “Guess this Product”.  So, let’s play now and see if you can Guess This Product listed below based on its ingredients.

CHICKEN STOCK, RICE, CHICKEN MEAT, CARROTS, CONTAINS LESS THAN 2% OF: MODIFIED FOOD STARCH, CHICKEN FAT, SALT, MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE, CELERY, WATER, DEHYDRATED MECHANICALLY SEPARATED CHICKEN, FLAVORING, BETA CAROTENE FOR COLOR, SODIUM PHOSPHATE, SOY PROTEIN ISOLATE, CELERY EXTRACT, ONION EXTRACT, DEHYDRATED CHICKEN, GARLIC EXTRACT.

So, did you guess chicken  soup?  Well your are right and you are not right!  You are right because the label Campbell’s has printed on it says Chicken Soup, but in my opinion you are not right because this is NOT Real soup!  Why, because it has additives like modified food starch and monosodium glutamate, both MSG (a known neurotoxin), soy protein isolate (I talk about pitfalls in my book The Soy Deception), flavorings, preservatives, and so many chemicals and non-foods that certainly are not healing to the body and may actually be harmful to the body.  If you read my previous blog you would know all it takes are some bones, some water, some vegetables and maybe salt and pepper to make some really delicious and amazingly healing soup.

But, hey you  might be saying to yourself right now, I actually eat the Healthy Choice Campbell’s Chicken Noodle so I am sure that is Real soup, right?  Well, take a look at this HUGE list of ingredients (aka. chemicals, additives, preservatives, etc) and you tell me…

Sorry to bust your bubble but you need to return that Healthy Choice soup too and go ahead and make some homemade broth and soup!  Trust me your body will thank you!
