Ready for a Summer Slim Down…with all REAL Food?

carissa and steveWith all of the weight loss information we get bombarded with, it’s tough to know what diet or eating program not only works but is also healthy for you.

As a Certified Health Coach who has worked with hundreds of busy moms, dads and other busy people over the last 10 years, it’s been a challenge for me to recommend products or programs. Most of them aren’t REAL food based and they are often designed to be a quick fix, not using the best quality ingredients. Often they don’t address the underlying issues for struggling with weight in the first place.

This is why I initially designed the 14 Day Get REAL Health Challenge for Busy People. So I would have a plan that I know works and is actually healthy for you.

Whether you join the almost 1,000 people who have already gone through the 14 Day Get REAL Health Challenge or not, whenever you look at a diet or health program, I want you to look for these principles. If these are a part of the program, then I’d say it’s something worth investing in.

1: The plan is REAL food based. Food represents a lot of things—love, comfort, family, reward, guilt, shame. Ultimately, at the cellular level, food is information. It tells your cells to behave in healthy and normal ways or in unhealthy and abnormal ways. Any program that has you counting calories is a big red flag because what matters is not really how many calories, but instead where the calories come from and the information they give to your body. One hundred calories from a local organic apple give our body different information than one hundred calories from some pastured chicken. And both give our body completely different information than that one hundred calorie Oreo Cookie pack. The apple is a cleansing food with fiber, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals. The pastured chicken is a building food with Powerful Protein and Friendly Fat. Those Oreo Cookies {and believe me when I say there was a day when I ate plenty of Oreos!} give our body the wrong information. Instead of cleansing or building, they fuel inflammation in the body. They fuel dis-ease. They fuel weight gain, poor energy and cravings. Any weight loss plan has be built on eating REAL food that gives your body the right information and nourishes you at the cellular level—not packaged foods that are low-fat and low-calorie. When you eat delicious REAL food you don’t have to even worry about calories.

2:  The plan has to put you into fat burning mode in a healthy way. A lot of weight loss plans are imbalanced and will ultimately keep you in fat storage mode. Eating 5-6 meals a day without enough Friendly Fat is a recipe for poor health and for fat storage for many people. Anytime a plan has you grazing and snacking throughout the day, you are taking in energy from the outside throughout the day—even if that energy is from a ‘healthy’ low-calorie carrot. When the body takes in outside energy frequently it never needs to tap into stored energy, aka fat. Because as a society our blood sugar and insulin are so out of whack due to all the highly processed foods, grains and sugars, we’ve been told we need to eat every few hours to manage our blood sugar and boost our metabolism. Really, we’re not meant to be eating so frequently. Every time we eat, we take in outside energy instead of using our own stored fat. Plus our body is digesting food all day long, which is metabolically very taxing. You want to look for a plan that teaches you how to eat 3 delicious meals each day that have the right combination of Powerful Protein, Friendly Fat and Colorful Carbs for you so that your body will turn into a fat burning machine while being fueled for great health.

3:  The plan needs to give your digestive system lots of TLC. This isn’t something you hear about a lot when looking at weight loss programs, but digestive health is foundational for not only reaching and maintaining your ideal weight, but also for having more energy and overall better health. What does that look like in a weight loss program? Eating the right combinations of REAL food, while crowding out the inflammatory foods that I call the Suspicious 7, will help you heal and seal your gut. It also means incorporating high quality probiotic-rich foods and drinks daily because probiotics are tied to weight loss.

4:  The plan needs to lessen toxins in your body, not increase them. We live in a toxic world. Fortunately we can control some of the toxins coming into our body. Any plan that is designed to help you lose weight and get healthier needs to address this because toxins keep us fat and unhealthy. Any plan designed around packaged foods isn’t addressing this. 5:  The plan needs built-in guided support and community. It’s proven that social support will help us to be more successful whenever we set out to reach a weight loss or health goal.
